This video series – new New Zealanders – shares the recent settlement stories of refugees and migrants in Nelson, Aotearoa New Zealand. It is suitable for learners in years 7–8 and 9–10.


New New Zealanders resources.

In this series of videos, the participants describe:

  • reasons why they moved to Aotearoa New Zealand with their families
  • their experiences and ways they have adapted, as newcomers
  • ways that they maintain and share their culture in their new home.

Included teacher support materials can be used as a springboard for multiple areas of investigation.

Use the videos to support learning in te ao tangata | social sciences, including learning about Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories. This resource provides:

  • curriculum links to Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories within te ao tangata | social sciences
  • questions to prompt ākonga thinking and conversations
  • suggested learning experiences
  • links to supporting resources for teachers and ākonga to ‘dig deeper’.
